Protect Your Website Content

In today's information age, content is extremely valuable on the Internet. Having interesting, relevant web content can increase the amount of traffic to your website a great deal. Many people recognize this fact and will do whatever it takes to secure the best content for their sites, even stealing it. These people overlook copyright laws and use other people's textual and graphical web content for their own use. Unfortunately, anyone with a website can become a victim of this type of theft. However, there are ways to prevent theft or rectify the situation when theft has already occurred. The most important step to take when publishing a site to the web is to provide a copyright mark on each page. JavaScript makes this a simple and quick task. It allows you to enter the company or site name and year of creation. Apply the JavaScript and you will be able to update the webpages with this information automatically. A copyright notice will help deter people from stealing your web content. However, there are steps that you can take to reclaim your web content when people ignore the copyright notice. If you find that your text or graphics were stolen and used on another's website, you should try to contact the owner of the website. Sometimes, there is a page of contacts on the Internet. If not, you can look up the owner's contact information in the WHOIS directory. Send a professional, yet polite letter to the owner asking them to remove your web content from their website. If they do not comply, you may send another letter. If they still refuse to remove your web content, you may want to take legal action against them. Just be sure that you can prove that you created and owned the web content before they obtained it.
